From the 1960's the tourist boom has driven the economy of this borough whose first hotels date back to the end of the 19th Century.

The old centre is outstanding for its cobble stone streets and beautiful corners such as Charco Plaza, Punta del Viento lookout and Las Lonjas Street with its fine stately homes as seen in the Iriate or the Remier House.

One of the best panoramic views of the city is from Taoro Park, which is situated on a promontory.

The Botanical Garden, founded by Alonso Nava y Grimón at the end of the 18th Century, is a vast landscaped garden and has become an international reference centre for botanical research.

Lake Martiánez with its pools, sculptures and fountains is one of the great works of Cesar Manrique, who also left his mark in Jardín Beach, between San Felipe Castle (17th Century) and the coastal district of Punta Brava.

Colón Avenue lined with tall palm tress runs along the coast from Martiánez Cliff to the 1780 San Telmo Hermitage.

Businesses and restaurants of every type proliferate throughout the route and almost on all the streets of the old town.
