The confrontation between Guanches (natives) and the Spanish, which took place in the Acentejo ravine in 1494, gave rise to the city's name which means the "Slaughter of Acentejo", and commemorates the victory of the natives over the invaders.

The farmlands are largely dedicated to the grape vine, which has resulted in more and more growers bottling their highly appreciated red wines under the label of Tacarone-Acentejo D.O. (Denomination of Origin).

La Vica lookout and recreation area sits above the town and is of interest for its scenic and natural beauty.

The coastline forms part of the 'Protected Space of the El Sauzal and Tacoronte Cliffs', a refuge for marine birds and endemic plants.

Places of tourist interest are the San Antonio Abad Hermitage, Doña Sexta country house, the Antiguo Hospicio (old orphanage), the Barco House, Acentejo ravine, and the restored homes in the San Antonio and Lomo de la Zapatera neighbourhoods.
