Called "Echeyde" by the Guanches, it has undoubtedly become the distinctive symbol of Tenerife above the other islands given that it is the highest peak of the entire Spanish territory at 3,717 metres . Despite appearances, the Teide is not a mountain but a volcano that was active some 150,000 years ago.
In 1954 it was declared a National Park but is actually treated as a Heritage of Humanity site. Access to the summit of the volcano is prohibited without special permission; however, there are perfectly adequate areas for exploration as well as a cable car that rises up to 3,500 metres .
